(Opening Scripture: Psalm 46:10 – “Be still, and know that I am God.”)
Brothers and sisters, we live in a world that rarely slows down. A world of constant noise, endless notifications, and the relentless pressure to keep moving forward. We are bombarded with information, demands, and the anxieties of daily life. In the midst of this whirlwind, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, lost, and disconnected from the very source of our strength: God.
Today, I want to talk about the power of stillness. In a world that screams for our attention, God whispers. He invites us to “be still, and know that I am God.” But what does that mean? How do we find stillness in the midst of the storm?
(Point 1: Recognizing the Storms in Our Lives)
We all face storms. These storms can take many forms: financial struggles, relationship problems, health issues, or even the internal battles we wage with doubt and fear. These storms can leave us feeling tossed and turned, like a small boat on a raging sea.
Think about the disciples in the boat during the storm on the Sea of Galilee. They were experienced fishermen, yet they were terrified. The waves were crashing, the wind was howling, and they feared for their lives. Just like them, we can feel overwhelmed by the storms of life.
(Point 2: The Stillness Within the Storm)
But in the midst of that storm, Jesus was asleep. He was at peace. He was still. This wasn’t because he was unaware of the danger, but because he knew who was in control. He knew that even in the midst of chaos, God was present.
Finding stillness isn’t about ignoring the storms. It’s about finding peace within them. It’s about recognizing that even when the waves are crashing, God is still our anchor.
(Point 3: Cultivating Stillness)
So, how do we cultivate this stillness?
- Make time for prayer and meditation: Set aside time each day to connect with God. Find a quiet place where you can be alone with your thoughts and listen to His voice.
- Read scripture: The Bible is a source of comfort and guidance. It reminds us of God’s promises and His unwavering love.
- Practice mindfulness: Pay attention to the present moment. Focus on your breath, your senses, and the beauty around you.
- Disconnect from distractions: Limit your exposure to social media, television, and other distractions that can clutter your mind.
- Trust in God’s sovereignty: Remember that God is in control, even when things seem chaotic. Surrender your worries and trust in His plan.
(Point 4: The Fruit of Stillness)
When we cultivate stillness, we experience the fruit of the Spirit: peace, joy, and hope. We gain clarity, wisdom, and strength. We become more aware of God’s presence in our lives.
Just as Jesus calmed the storm on the Sea of Galilee, He can calm the storms in our lives. But we must first learn to be still.
Let us strive to find stillness in the midst of the storm. Let us trust in God’s presence and His power. And let us experience the peace that surpasses all understanding.
Let us pray.
(Prayer)
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your presence in our lives. Help us to find stillness in the midst of the storms we face. Grant us the peace that comes from knowing you are in control. We surrender our worries and trust in your plan. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
